Young American are faced with their first adult decisions before even entering adulthood. “Do I go to college?” “Am I able to go to college?” “How can I go to college?” “Do I need a degree?”
In a society that emphasizes the importance of a college education and beyond, a degree is the gold standard. It is considered by many to be a prerequisite to success and even survival in the workforce. Which is partly true; but this mindset may also sabotage many fully capable and intelligent young professionals. It contributes to the assumption that greatness cannot be obtained without a degree.
What happens to those of us who decide against a formal college education? What happens when we are forced to decide between crippling student debt and something that increases our chances of success? What are we supposed to do when there are such polarized options for starting our careers?
We begin to ask the question, “Can we find success without a college degree?”
And the answer is “YES”. But it won’t be easy.
There are certainly ways for our young people to find and reach greatness in their careers without a college education. It may require a more personalized strategy, and it will absolutely require creativity.
The goal of establishing this community is not to discourage anyone from attending college if they want and have the means to do so. Rather – let’s continue to educate ourselves and others on how to find success when we are entering or navigating the workforce without a degree. Let’s discuss how the other two-thirds of us are achieving greatness without a college degree.
